Wanis helps retailers make the most out of Easter

With Easter just around the corner, Wanis, the Afro-Caribbean food and drink specialists are once again gearing up for a busy period as the Afro-Caribbean community prepares for their biggest celebration of the year.

Easter represents one of the most important feast days of the calendar for this community and a time when families gather to eat, drink and celebrate with certain traditions and customs being adhered to. With the abstinence of Lent over, consumers can indulge themselves on a range of savoury and sweet snacks making it an excellent opportunity for retailers.

However, this time of year is most famous in the Caribbean, especially to the children, for the long time tradition of "Bun and Cheese," and the addition of Spiced Bun adds great value to seasonal displays for retailers. Wanis' Jamaica Sun Spiced Buns are made to a traditional recipe using an authentic mix of spices and are traditionally eaten with cheese or lashings of butter. Last year over the Easter period Wanis saw monthly sales more than double for their Spiced Buns.

Sanjay Wadhwani said: "Retailers would do well to keep in touch with the various celebration days and feast customs surrounding different religions and cultures. Spiced Buns are a massive tradition amongst the Afro-Caribbean community and offer retailers the potential to increase sales not only amongst Afro-Caribbean consumers but also amongst adventurous consumers looking to experiment with different flavours, tastes, cuisines and customs."

As well as spiced buns, there is also increased interest at this time of year in other traditional Afro-Caribbean Easter foods. Amongst the Jamaican community, Jamaica's national dish Saltfish and Ackee is a favourite at this time of year where as other consumers will cook roasting joints in authentic Afro-Caribbean marinades and seasonings. Other staple Afro-Caribbean ingredients such as peas, beans, rice and callaloo also perform well at this time of year as housewives, mothers and grandmothers compete to create traditional Afro-Caribbean favourites for their families.

Sanjay Wadhwani said: "Through our diverse portfolio we aim to provide retailers with all their Afro-Caribbean needs during Easter. As well as offering a wide selection of iconic Afro-Caribbean brands such as DG Malta, Bigga, Dragon Stout, Walkerswood and Baron Sauces, under our Tropical Sun and Jamaica Sun brands we aim to offer specialist products and authentic ingredients. All these brands have real heritage and provenance behind them and signify quality and authenticity to the consumer; retailers opting for lesser known brands risk losing sales."
